Rooted in Broward: The Women Who Shaped South Florida’s Community

As America marks its 250th anniversary, the America250 initiative reminds us that strong communities are built by individuals who dedicate themselves to service and leadership. At Dania Beach Adventures, a proud member of the Adventures Unbound family, we are honoring Women’s History Month by recognizing four Broward County women whose contributions have helped shape their community.

The Heart of Broward County

Longtime community member Lottie Albert devoted decades to volunteer work across Broward County. Her service earned recognition from multiple organizations, as well as induction into the Dr. Nan S. Hutchinson Broward Senior Hall of Fame and a dedicated day of appreciation in her honor.

In public service, Commissioner Margaret Bates made history as the first African American woman elected to the Lauderhill City Commission. Her leadership extended through multiple organizations, reflecting a long-term commitment to civic engagement and representation.

Advocacy for women’s rights and civic participation was a defining part of Susan Forman’s work. Through her involvement in the Broward County Commission on the Status of Women and her role in political organizing, she contributed to broader efforts supporting equality and representation.

Continuing that work today, Annette R. Gardiner focuses on community programs and advocacy initiatives that support women and families across Broward County. Her involvement in mentorship and outreach reflects the ongoing importance of local leadership.
